An Open Letter to The King

His Majesty King Charles III
Buckingham Palace
London SW1A 1AA
United Kingdom

Your Majesty,

I hope this letter, written during the interim period between governments, finds you well.

I am writing to you as a concerned subject and an independent candidate for MP in Bridlington and the Wolds, deeply worried for the welfare of our nation.

I wish to address an issue of significant public interest and propose a constructive solution that could greatly benefit our society.

First and foremost, I acknowledge the constitutional conventions that define Your Majesty's role within our political system. I understand and deeply respect the limited and ceremonial nature of the monarchy, and the necessity for the monarch to remain politically neutral and refrain from direct intervention in partisan matters.

In recent times, there has been growing public concern regarding the ethical standards of some members of the previous government.

Incidents of misconduct and corruption have surfaced, undermining public trust in our political institutions. Specific examples, such as Charlie Elphicke (rape), Iain Duncan Smith (Byotrol), Daniel Kawczynski (bullying), Baroness Mone (PPE), Lord Cameron (Greensill), Theresa May (Windrush), Boris Johnson (lying), and Rishi Sunak (Partygate) have highlighted the urgent need for enhanced transparency and accountability.

Ethical governance is essential for the well-being of our nation and its citizens. When integrity is compromised in public life, it can lead to eroded public trust, poor decision-making, and the misuse of public funds. These consequences are detrimental to the functioning of a healthy democracy and the prosperity of our society.

As we transition to a new administration, I hope that during the Audience when the new Leader accepts your invitation to form a government, they will introduce the topic of prioritizing integrity and accountability. Their acknowledgment of the ethical failings of the previous administration and outlining specific measures to improve standards of conduct would be a significant step toward restoring public confidence.

I further hope that they will take up my call for the establishment of a Royal Commission on Promoting Transparency and Accountability in Government. While I fully appreciate Your Majesty's commitment to neutrality, I believe that such a commission could provide valuable recommendations for strengthening ethical governance and restoring public trust.

I recognize that Your Majesty cannot directly intervene in political matters. However, I hope that you might consider using your esteemed position to subtly encourage ethical governance.

This could be achieved through highlighting the importance of integrity in all walks of life in your public speeches, incorporating the topic into your annual Christmas address, promoting integrity through your charitable work and patronages, and encouraging discussions about ethical governance in your private meetings with the Prime Minister and other political leaders.

In conclusion, I urge Your Majesty, the new Prime Minister, and all elected representatives to prioritize integrity and accountability in public life. By working together, we can strengthen the UK's democratic institutions and restore public trust.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I remain,

Yours faithfully,

Tom Cone
Independent Candidate
